Saori Nakagawa / Fumomancer
In Saori's world, souls eventually develop their own powers after going through multiple cycles of reincarnation. Most never unlock their soul power as their queue time between reincarnations is too short and having a physical body restricts them even further. After her premature death, Saori endured extensive training and managed to find hers: the ability to create constructs with smoke as her medium.

Strengths: Saori's constructs are made of smoke that she can pull from the environment and smoke bombs. As to what she can create, it's only limited by Saori's imagination and how much smoke she has. She can use her MP to give her constructs a boost in durability and strength.

Weaknesses: All of Saori's skills rely on her reserve of smoke via smoke bombs or flasks filled with smoke. Every construct she creates are temporary and will not possess the full power of the original despite her mastery in things like weapons. Her second job determines what her stat changes and weapon proficiency. If she creates a weapon that requires ammunition, she must provide her own.

Initial Fumo-kinesis Manipulate smoke with user's will. Constructs last for either 5 minutes or 3 hits.
One Month Melee Sincerest Flattery Able to create temporary copies of melee weapons.
Three Months Ranged Sincerest Flattery Able to create temporary copies of long range weapons.
Five Months Smoke in Your Eyes Creates an orb of smoke that explodes in the target's face. May cause blind status effect.
Six Months Chain Smoke Creates a chain to either bind a target temporarily or as a means to propel herself.
Nine Months Magic Smoke Use MP to increase durability and power of constructs by 30%
One Year Smoke and Mirrors Saori is able to transform into smoke to negate one attack aimed at her.

OC info:
When the universe was created, gods, spirits, supernatural creatures walked among the living in the same world as humans but it became clear a separation was necessary for all to survive after centuries of coexistence. The actions of the original gods are recorded as the mythologies and folklore that’s been passed over time. With this many souls being active all at once, the universe became strained. The main gods decided then to create the other-realm Kuukan as a separate spirit world. While they aren’t forbidden to cross between the worlds, they’re advised not to spend a long time in the living realm or they risk of being exposed and dealing with possible consequences.

Fast-forward to 2012 AD/CE and this is when Saori comes in. Humanity has flourished like our world in terms of technology, culture, and history. Humans in this time period rarely encounter the supernatural and gods in plain sight unless they were blessed with a strong spiritual ability or the later deliberately spells it out for them. However, the Ayakashi, an umbrella term for the lowly supernaturals, run amok in both Kuukan and the world of the living. Ayakashi seek to become stronger and possibly evolve into the much more powerful Mononoke. The method is a gamble that requires consuming a living soul and any strong emotions that reside in them. Majority of the time, the power increase isn’t permanent. If an Ayakashi desired to be stronger and evolve into a Mononoke, they would have to eat an exceptionally strong soul that endure heavy suffering in their lifetime. The consumed soul is permanently gone as a result. At Saori’s time, soul loss is on the rise and much faster than the production of souls. If it weren’t for the work of Inari’s corps, the rate of increasing soul lost would escalate and possibly trigger a disaster for both realms.

All souls return to Kuukan after living their most recent past life and wait to be reincarnated onto the next life. Since they no longer have physical body, their they can travel to Kuukan through tiny spaces/crevices found in real life or chose to be escorted by a reaper or whoever they believe would be there to lead them through a gate to Kuukan. These points are often tied to places of spiritual significance like the Fushimi Inari temple in Kyoto. For souls of the departed, it’s a one way trip because with no physical body to house them, they are quite vulnerable. The only times the gates are not one way are for stronger beings who can create a physical body to hide in.

Judges, from Anubis to Enma, await them when they come out of the other side of the gate. Based on their actions in their last life, the judges determine their next incarnation, when they will be reborn and where they can stay as they wait. Material wealth, spirituality, race and sex do not have any influence in the judgements. A kind soul who lived in poor conditions could live in the Second District while a rich corporate head could be sent to the Fourth because they willing exploited the weakness in others to climb up the social ladder. Every now and then there would be souls who would object to their evaluation. As of this point, that is the judges’ final decision but souls may use their wait time to try even the odds for a favorable reincarnation. The reincarnation wait time can range from five years to twenty or even longer. Before the rebirthing process, which involves sealing the memory of their previous life to prevent confusion, they can request a second judging. Majority of the time however, it’s not enough to change the previous decision of the judges though.

Kuukan in general is a chop suey of cultures. Even though the souls cycle in and out of Kuukan, their imprint still stands with their buildings, food and etc.The main library, for example and one of Saori’s favorite downtime spots, houses every text since the beginning of the written word. One block could have architecture from 1920s Japan but the next might be something from 60s. New advances in technology and trends are often brought over from the living realm. While firearms of today’s caliber can be found, magic tends to be the most effective manner of combat when it arrives.

The populated portion of the realm is split into “districts” even though they are about the size of a small densely populated country. There are four main districts, which transitional areas between. It’s common to see areas in districts based on the culture a soul lived in. The heavily mixed areas are gates to the next district and the market areas. Kuukan doesn’t tolerate discrimination based on culture, sexual orientation and sex as one of it’s main rules to maintain the peace. Anyone found breaking this policy is taken in by the police to the judges who will determine their fate. Arguments do happen but it’s only when it escalates into violence is when the police have to be called in.

The First District, the center of Kuukan, belongs to the deities from past and present mythologies. Said deities are not immortal and are subject to the rules of reincarnation as well. Because of this, the name of the gods are more of legacy title that’s passed on to those the predecessor finds worthy to share. It doesn’t necessarily have to be passed down a family line. From the Greek Pantheon to the gods of Shinto, they can be found in Kuukan. Regardless if they are still worshipped or not, their domain is still tied to that region in the living realm. They do work together with other gods who share similar domains. An example would be gods/goddesses of agriculture determine the overall world outcome of a crop for the next year. That’s not to say all the gods work together like everything’s all sunshine and lollipops. Just like any human government, gods can easily become corrupt, form cliques within, and abuse their powers to exploit others. Loki surrounds himself with other gods who share his elitist thoughts about a human like Saori being elevated to a goddess. It’s only until she gives him the smackdown coming to him do they realize she’s not someone to underestimate.

While it’s possible for one person to carry that title like Tenjou’s father, many prefer to share the title with their spouse. It not only serves a check and balance system but it’s said there extra benefits like power boosts and extra abilities exclusive to those who share titles. They work in sync with each other to decide what events will occur. For Saori and Tenjou, the first years they spent together when she arrives in Kuukan results in the two not meshing well with each other at all. Initially she thought he didn’t want her to join the corps because she is a woman. That is quickly debunked when she’s introduced to Ami. It’s Tenjou’s century old mindset that men mustn’t show their emotions openly, along with Saori’s hesitance eventually leads to them on a twenty year game of tug-of-war.Thankfully, they’re began to break out from those mindsets for the better.

Those who work under them reside in both the First and Second Districts. Majority of the Second Districts are souls or supernatural creatures whose good deeds outweigh the bad. The lifestyles of the first two districts are richer compared to the next two. Kuukan is more or less a mythology/folklore fan’s wet dream. After all, it’s not every day you can spend a morning talking stories with a river spirit and then have afternoon tea with Demeter. While some of Saori’s favorite locations are the library and a few restaurants are in her home district, she often explores the second and third districts when she’s off from work. It was her way to learn what’s going on in the other districts since she didn’t want to lose touch with the needs of both Kuukan and the living realm.

The second-biggest district is the third district. It can be considered a “purgatory” where those deemed as neutral reside. It serves as the gateway and orientation center for souls returning from the living world. Disorientation and distress commonly show up with new arrivals but there are plenty of locals more than happy to assist them. Because of its dense population, apartment complexes and crowding are the norms here. There are plenty of jobs available for those who want them or they can use bartering to gain a better lifestyle. This is where a good chunk of trouble comes from if not from the Fourth District. Being the middle district, it’s a buffer zone for the first two districts and the final one.

The final and currently the fast growing area is the Fourth District. Hell is a common name for it. It’s home to souls, ayakashi, and malicious supernatural creatures. The Fourth District is split by what heinous deeds they’ve committed, much like Dante’s Inferno. The luxuries of the other districts cannot be found here. Unlike the other districts, because of its rapid increase, security at the borders is much more restricted. There is no other gate beyond the one between the Third and Fourth districts. The latter bleeds into the wild of Kuukan. Here nature runs rampant and all flora and fauna of the world past and present can be found. Even ancient beasts like dragons can be found but they are a rare sight. Because of this open space, it’s a common practice for the corps to draw their target out of a district to here to decrease the collateral damage if possible.

Summary: Saori's parents moved to Kyoto when her mom was still pregnant with her. The move happened because her father got a new job there. Her mother was a home-maker while her father worked at a university, as a literature professor. Three years later, Akira was born. All was good until Akira was 4 and Saori was 7, when their mother got sick. Her health began to deteriorate until she finally passed away. That left Saori to basically become the caretaker of the house. Her father was devastated with the lost of his wife and his children's mother so the depression began to set in.

One year later, the father went to work but never returned. She vividly remembers walking to the train station with him where they departed to take their own routes. Their grandmother who lived nearby took them in. When her age made it difficult to raise them to her best of her skills, Saori took over. She had to seek permission to work in part-time jobs while at school for the extra income.

In high school, her grandmother thought showing her around Kyoto’s Gion district might convince her to become a geiko, an apprentice geisha. After a traditional tea ceremony, she ended up falling in love with tea instead. During her whatever spare time she does have, she looked for new books (specifically on ghost/paranormal subjects) or manga, or buying different kinds of tea.

Her curiosity about the supernatural started when she was little. Her father worked until his disappearance on translating several folklore from classical Japanese language to the modern version. While Akira would be scared out of his wits by some of the stories, Saori would always ask for more. Her love for folklore is later reflected in her college work. Saori eventually graduated high school and attended a college in Osaka. She even studied abroad in America for a year. Under her host family, she learned even more cooking and even had her first boyfriend, a German study-abroad student. He did propose to her before they had to part, but she turned him down. She graduated college with a degree in English. However it wasn't without a hitch. A week before her graduation, Akira disappeared after they had an argument. Akira discovered about the rejected proposal and he was angry with her. He wanted her to live her own life for once. There was a police search, but with no leads, it quickly became a cold case. While trying to find any clues, she came across a necklace with a green-blue stone with a note attached to it. That necklace was supposed to be her graduation gift.

Saori worked in a publication company after graduation, specializing in translation work for three years, but found the work to be not as satisfying over time. She got her projects done on time, but there other things that bothered her. It was mostly the social pressure she felt from her higher ups. She was already past 25 and still not married. She already saw countless co-workers come and go as soon as they found a suitable husband to marry. It was then Grandmother suggested she maybe do something she liked: cooking. So she began to plan out making a cafe.

One day, she visited the Fushimi-Inari temple in Kyoto. As she climbed up the stairs to the main building, she heard the sounds of little bells chiming. Thinking it was nothing, she continued. Then the chimes got louder and louder as she went up until he finally looked back. That was the last anyone ever heard from Saori. She’s captured by a Nopperabou, a faceless mononoke who has taken her deep in the neighboring mountain side.

It's explained that mononoke grow from the weaker ayakashi when they feed on a human's strongest emotion. In most cases, it's a very bad thing. In exchange for the power boost, they lose their identity. However there is a way to overcome this. If they consume a soul of someone who despite many hardships occurring in their life are still pure, not only does their power increase but their lifespan increases as well without losing their identity. The Nopperabou is able to pull away her soul from her body. A man by the name of Tenjou arrives to take it down but it’s too late. The Mononoke pins down Saori’s soul and eats her physical body in front of her and Tenjou. The man finishes the creature but the damage is done.

Tenjou then decides to take her to see Inari, his father, about her options since she died prematurely according how much time was left in her lifespan. And while she is able to be reincarnated, she wouldn’t be able to do very soon. The next chance she’s able to be reborn won’t be for another century. A soul without a body must reside in the supernatural realm for extra protection against Mononoke.

Inari decides that Saori can stay under Tenjou's care. After touring around Kuukan and staying with Tenjou, she realizes his purpose. He’s the leader of Inari's elite corps dedicated to protecting both the living and souls in Kuukan from being eaten by ayakashi who want to be mononoke. In the past century, the influx of souls returning from their time in the living realm has decreased due to the rogue supernatural creatures consuming said souls. The problem with that is two fold for another reason. Souls that were consumed by them are forcibly removed from the cycle and new souls are extremely hard to produce and only arrive in small batches every fifty years or so. With mononoke consuming at a rate faster than production, this throws the balance between the living realm and Kuukan off. This became a great concern to many of the gods. Inari was the one who spearheaded the creation of the corps and other gods have given their support to it.

Saori came to a decision to help Tenjou so more people won't suffer the same fate as her. Tenjou objected but eventually gives in. She goes through training with Pluto, the corps second-strongest, and it would take her a few years until she got Inari's blessing and joined in the corps. Naturally the road for her to become a capable fighter was a rough one mixed with martial arts, free-running, meditation and research. Pluto was quite surprised she stuck around that long. He’s trained many for the corps but a good percent get burned out and drop before making the ranks. What drove her was the idea that she may be dead, but she wasn’t out and could still make some kind of contribution to the world.During her training, Saori learned when souls are not attached to a living body they can tap into their innate powers. They can vary from purification to manipulation of elements. In her case, she can manipulate smoke to take on forms her will. While she can use different types of smoke, her strongest affinity is for smoke from lit incense. Plus its purifying abilities make it a better anti-ayakashi/mononoke weapon.

Under Inari’s corps, Saori spent years traveling throughout Kuukan and the living world to protect souls and also tried to dig up anything regarding the disappearances of her father and brother. Around her 15th year post-death, she and Tenjou came across a giant Nue, a Japanese chimera-like beast. He commented that Saori had a similar aura to a rather tasty soul he ate decades ago. To her horror, she discovered he was the one who spirited away her father and ate him. Consumed souls are lost permanently in her world, so she can never see him again. She snapped and she kills the Nue. Tenjou feared if she went out of control, she could become a target for the corps, and stayed with her the entire time until she calmed down. To this day however, she still does not know the whereabouts about her brother’s soul and she continues to search for any clues.

Eventually she did get an answer from the gods of fate, that she could be reborn soon. However, as part of the tradition of being reborn, her memories would be stored away as she lived a new life. It didn’t take Saori long to decide to actually turn down the offer. While she did missing being part of the living realm, she felt she made great progress and her actual calling was in Kuukan. Many, including even Tenjou, were baffled since most souls would’ve jumped at the chance to change to a new life. And to Saori’s surprise, the gods granted her wish and hinted she made the right decision.

Inari would later reveal to Saori that his ‘name’ is technically a title and has to be passed down to his son but traditionally the title of a god was shared by someone so he must marry if he intends to inherit. Fortunately over the years of working together Tenjou proposes to Saori and they get married. This came about after a particular Mononoke case which almost killed them. There was no backup support so it was just between them and a Jorou-gumo, a type of spider Mononoke who recently consumed a rather powerful soul. Tenjou was heavily injured but Saori barely managed to get to safety. While they hid to recover, Saori had him rest his head on her lap, he managed to ask her for her hand in marriage.

And while they have their duties as gods to fulfill prayers of the various sorts, they often go out to deal with the constant mononoke problem. Their marriage wasn’t a smooth pathway either. There were a few elitist gods who were not happy with a former human soul among their ranks. One of them, Loki, often tried to use his tricks to scare her out of becoming a god. At first, Saori was able to let it go but eventually something had to give and she managed to break his jaw with a punch to get her point across. She may not have been born as a god directly, but she was more of a god than they could ever be. (Don’t worry, he got better eventually.) The last opposing gods decided to keep their objections mum since then and some even warmed up to her.

For the longest time, she always wanted to have children of her own while her husband, Tenjou, did not. Six years into their marriage, Saori saved a child from a mononoke attack and the girl clung onto her until they were home. Tenjou tried to convince both of them that adoption wasn’t an option but he eventually caved in. While they did spread word of the missing girl, there weren’t much leads to follow up on. A few months later, the girl’s parents eventually did show up on their doorstep. After a tearful goodbye, Tenjou decided they should have kids. A month later, Saori is pregnant and gives birth to fraternal twins, who are now 5 years old.

Saori’s an older sister/motherly type of character. She’s quite independent because she had to help take care of her little brother, grandmother, and herself for a good portion of her life. Akira was a handful as a child, so she had to be more mature than other kids her age. When their grandmother was getting too old to run the household herself, Saori took on the responsibility. That also meant getting permission to work a part time job while in high school and college, which left barely enough time to for herself.

As she took on the guardian role, she essentially became an anchor not only to her family and friends, but to her husband. Tenjou and his corps were in a period of feeling burned out from the rise of rogue mononoke attacking both in Kuukan and the living world before she arrived. Her presence helped to lift their morale. Even though Tenjou didn’t want to admit it, he took the fact he couldn’t save Saori very personally. She always reassures him it was never his fault.

If a person needed someone to talk to or needed something, Saori would be there to help in anyway possible. She always waits for them to finish and never says her opinion out loud unless they do want to hear it. In many cases she tries to get all sides of the story. She’s considered by her peers as a very reliable and diligent hard worker.

However, she does tend not to be open about herself to others immediately in return. She mostly keeps it to herself unless she has someone who she completely trusts and has managed to stay by her side for a very long time. Building those long term relationships is even harder. After losing her family and regrettably saying no to her first marriage proposal, it’s hard for her to imagine herself having those types of relationships. This would explain why it would take Tenjou years to get close enough to her to propose to her. When she realizes his feelings towards her, she accepts them but Tenjou was tied down to his doubts about the idea of marriage. While Inari and Saori came to an agreement that she would marry him, she would wait until he came around and become more honest with himself. Before her death, she never sought out even one night stands.

Her tendency to fall on the "you never asked" policy of explaining herself is one of her bad habits. This is seen when Saori never mentions her godly status. Her biggest reason for that is, she doesn't want people to judge her because of it. She understands that some people will think less of her and some people have a bias against deities. Saori wants to be judged for who she is as a person.

As she spent more time in Kuukan, along with her best friend Ami’s influence, those walls she kept herself in began to break down. Ami would be the one next to Tenjou who would show Saori around Kuukan plus was a major help in her self-discovery moments. Because she burdened herself with her family’s needs over her own, she had little time devoted to herself. She didn’t have a committed relationship and didn’t explore much of her sexuality until her study abroad experience in the States. Ami helped her see what her own limits were and taught her it was okay to indulge in herself from time to time. Thanks to her, Saori managed to lighten up even more.

Some, including her own husband, have argued her kindness makes her unfit to be part of the corps. Her kindness does not make her a doormat. She does get angry and stands up for herself if her close friends and family get hurt, she’s being pestered while at work, or someone insults her skills without providing any sort of constructive criticism. Violence is a last resort for her. In her line of work however there isn’t much of a choice, but Saori always tends to be the one who checks on the victims first before anything else. After experiencing the multiple deaths in the family and her own, she knows the value of life very well.

The relationship between Tenjou and Saori can be described as a test of patience and trust. Neither side sought the other actively, it just happened. They wavered between strictly work partners and friends with benefits. Her initial enthusiasm to join the corps willingly reminded him how he was when the corps was founded: optimistic, energized and ready to dive into anything. At the time they met, he was a knight in sour armor. While he continued doing his work as a protector of souls from Mononoke, his cynicism reared its head now and then. Since his father allowed Saori to stay in their residence and join in the corps, he would often avoid her if possible. It was not out of spite, but he was afraid of failing her again. If she died in her current state, it would be a permanent death.

During their work, she often interacted with many individuals and he was amazed with how resilient emotionally and physically she was. She manages to give hope to others, including himself. Several years since she entered the corps, Tenjou told her his real name and she only calls him by that when they are alone or if she’s deadly serious about a matter. They did realize they had feelings for each other early on, but neither pushed for going beyond just dating each other despite all of their friends trying to get them together. Fear and hesitation was what kept them from getting married earlier. For Tenjou, being a son of a significant god and next in line was a lot of pressure. He had doubts he could carry the legacy and if Saori would ever want someone like him as a husband. Saori, on the other hand, was more than ready, but she knew Tenjou wasn’t and didn’t want to pressure him into marriage. They both developed a deep respect for each other.Their near death experience wakes them up and he manages to propose to her. They decided to become soul-mates, and as the term implies, their souls would find a way back to each other every time they would be reborn. Since gods have longer lifespans and their level of trust with each was deep, the two created an open marriage to keep things lively. The two main conditions were all parties must consent and no children outside their marriage.

Another thing to note is she never actively pursued becoming a god. Many of her opponents accuse her of it, but it’s far from the truth. It happened to come along with marrying Tenjou. She would only use her powers if it was part of her godly duty, like blessings. Plus she counts her own soul power to be separate, so she uses it more in combat. Unlike some of the elitists, Saori considers being Inari only a small part of who she is and not everything.

Powers: When Saori ascends to goddess, she receives several powers both active and passive. The passive ones includes super-human strength, an extended lifespan, enhanced five senses, the ability to sense and communicate with both spirits and animals (particularly foxes since they are an animal associated with Inari), and a self-healing ability. Her active powers include creating any tea leaves or rice, manipulating luck, flash stepping short distances, shape shifting, and fertility manipulation.

Her greatest and unique power is her soul power of smoke manipulation. With this power, she can construct things like weapons, grappling hooks and etc. with smoke as her medium. She’s limited only by how much smoke she has to use and if she’s conscious. With smoke from lit incense or for religious purposes, its divine properties gives her an edge to those weak to it. The objects she can construct are not permanent and can be shattered with enough force.

Even though she’s a goddess, she knows better than to use her powers as a crutch in a battle. After spending twenty years in harsh Spartan-esque training from Pluto, she can fight without them. Hand-to-hand combat, melee weapons proficiency while favoring scythes, free running, survival in the wild, fighting on a mount, and fighting creatures that completely outclass her by size. Prior to learning how to fight, she became skilled in translating (Japanese/English), cooking, and raising a household.

Entry: Saori will find her way to Bastion on her own after some time looking around.

CHARACTER NAME: Saori Nakagawa

CANON POINT: post-marriage
FAMILY TYPES: Since I played Saori here before, I’d like her to regain Elecmon as her partner.

WORLD:
Saori’s living world is modeled after our current (2012/13) world. However, her world also contains gods, spirits, ghosts and other supernatural creatures. Humans rarely encounter them in plain sight, but their actions can influence the human realm such as ‘spirited away’ cases, people going insane or unsolved homicide cases. Lowly spirits can increase their powers and sometimes evolve by consuming strong emotions. Because of this, they often harass humans they see as a potential meal until they are ripe for eating. In the case they devour strong negative emotions and/or human flesh, they evolve into mononoke.

The realm of supernatural is known as Kuukan. All souls return here after living their most recent past life and wait to be reincarnated onto the next. There are judges who determine, based on the deeds they did, their next incarnation, when they will be reborn and where they can stay as they wait. If they wish to be reborn into something better, ie human or above, they can use the wait period to tip the odds in their favor and ask for a second judgment.

Kuukan in general is a chop suey of cultures and time periods. While firearms of today’s caliber can be found, magic tends to be the most effective manner of combat when it arrives. Since wait period between incarnations can be quite long, it’s not uncommon for souls to develop “another life” such as creating a family or starting a new business.

The realm is split into “districts” even though they are about the size of a small densely populated country. There are four main districts, which transitional areas between. The First District belongs to the deities from past and present mythologies. Said deities are not immortal and are subject to the rules of reincarnation as well. It can be considered a “purgatory” where those deemed as neutral reside. It serves as the gateway and orientation center for souls returning from the living world. The final and currently the fast growing area is the Fourth District. Hell is a common name for it. It’s home to souls, ayakashi, and malicious supernatural creatures. Unlike the other districts, because of its rapid increase, security at the borders is much more restricted.

PERSONALITY:
Saori’s an older sister/motherly type of character. She’s quite independent because she had to help take care of her little brother, grandmother, and herself for a good portion of her life. Akira was a handful as a child, so she had to be more mature than other kids her age. When their grandmother was getting too old to run the household herself, Saori took on the responsibility. That also meant getting permission to work a part time job while in high school and college, which left barely enough time to for herself.

As she took on the guardian role, she essentially became an anchor not only to her family but to her husband.

So long as there was the tiniest hint of a possibility, she would fight for it.

However, she does tend not to be open about herself to others in return.

They both developed a deep respect for each other and .Their near death experience wakes them up and he manages to propose to her.

HISTORY:
Saori's parents moved to Kyoto when her mom was still pregnant with her. The move happened because her father got a new job there. Her mother was a homemaker while her father worked at a university, as a literature professor.

She vividly remembers walking to the train station with him where they departed to take their own trains. (Saori would later find out he was devoured by a mononoke and later kills it, but she was too late to retrieve and purify his soul.) Their grandmother who lived nearby took them in. When her age made it difficult to raise them to her best of her skills, Saori took over.

In high school, grandmother thought showing her around Kyoto’s Gion district might convince her to become a geiko, an apprentice geisha. After a traditional tea ceremony, she ended up falling in love with tea instead. During her whatever spare time she does have, she looks for new books (specifically on ghost/paranormal subjects) or manga, or buying different kinds of tea.

While in America, she went out with a German study abroad student. In the end, when he propose to her, she had to turn him down. She had a responsibility to her family first and didn’t have much confidence with living in Germany. She graduated college with a degree in English. However it wasn't without a hitch. A week before her graduation, Akira disappeared. They had an argument because he found out about the proposal she turned down. He was angry that she didn’t marry the guy, telling her to stop constantly giving up her own happiness and stormed out to cool off. There was a police search, but with no leads, it quickly became a cold case.

One day, she was visiting the Fushimi-Inari temple in Kyoto.

It explained that mononoke grow from the weaker ayakashi when they feed on a human's strongest emotion. In most cases, it's a very bad thing. In exchange for the power boost, they lose their identity. However there is a way to overcome this. If they consume a soul of someone who despite many hardships occurring in their life are still pure, not only does their power increase but their lifespan increases as well without losing their identity.

The Nopperabou is able to rip her soul from her body.

Saori comes to a decision to help Tenjou so more people won't suffer the same fate as her. What drove her was the idea that she may be dead, but she wasn’t out and could still make some kind of contribution to the world. During her training, Saori learned when souls are not attached to a living body they can tap into their innate powers.

During her initial stay in Terminal Tokyo, she had a job at Burgermon's diner and created the Spicy Burger challenge. She stayed during the Mario Kart event as more of an observer and helped in defending Terminal Tokyo from the brainwashed digimon. Some of the characters she's met that are still currently in game are Terra, Jin Uzuki, Jynx, Waver Velvet, Rise Kujikawa and Ed Finkelstein. She only stayed for about a month or so.

SAMPLES

FIRST PERSON:
What would you say is your greatest strength? I suppose it would have to be my own resilience. I’ve had a lot of things happen to me over the years, but I somehow managed to find the strength to keep going. Yes, sometimes it would be easier to accept “it’s the way things are” and sometimes cry about it but that wasn’t how I was raised to be.

If you were given the option to stay in the Digital World or return to your home, which would you choose? Why? There was a reason why I was brought to the digital world. I may never know what that is, but I’ll do my best. Unfortunately, my calling is my home. I have a very large responsibility to take care of over there as it is. I took on the responsibility of a god because I wanted to protect my world. If the two are linked, however, I’ll do my best to help.

You have one choice. That choice will result in either the end of the world or it will save it. Which way would you go?
Save it, so long as there is a sliver of hope. Despite the horrendous things humans have been doing lately, I still have hope for humanity. It's a sentimental reason but I do love the world and want to do my best to save it.

THIRD PERSON:
For Saori, the idea of another world didn't phase her. The sight of the local inhabitants and her own partner made her even more curious about the place. Rather than letting fear and anxiety try to get to her, she embraced it. While she would have liked it if whoever it was brought her here had asked first, what done was done. There was no point in whining about it when she could use that energy and time to do something more efficient. Though there were times she wondered if her husband and her friends were alright. Then again, they were more than capable of taking care of themselves but she didn’t want her disappearance to hinder them in any way. She spent her first days getting to know the other people who were pulled here and the facilities provided. Now she began to explore beyond the residential area and into more wild territory.

Even though she didn't have powers, it didn't stop her from taking the free running route of exploration. While they jumped in and out of the trees, Saori stopped when she heard someone crying. Without a second thought, she landed on the ground and pulled away some grass to reveal a crying Leafmon.

"Shhh," she softly shushed the baby digimon. "You poor thing. It's okay, you're safe now." Carefully, she scooped it up and rocked it. "There, there. What's a little guy like you doing out here? Don't worry, we're going to take you back to Primary Village, okay sweetie?" She gave it an assuring smile and it chirped happily.

“C’mon,” she turned her attention to her partner. “If we keep up a good pace, we can reach before nightfall.” The rookie digimon nodded in acknowledgement and led the way.

Character Name: Saori Nakagawa
Character Age: 28 physically, 80 mentally
Background:
Saori’s living world is modeled after our current world.

Saori's parents moved to Kyoto when her mom was still pregnant with her. The move happened because her father got a new job there. Her mother was a homemaker while her father worked at a university, as a literature professor. Three years later, Akira was born. All was good until Akira was 4 and Saori was 7, when their mother got sick. Her health began to deteriorate until she finally passed away. And while she is able to be reincarnated, she wouldn’t be able to do very soon. The next chance she’s able to be reborn won’t be for another century. A soul without a body must reside in the supernatural realm for extra protection against Mononoke.

Because of this, the name of the gods are more of legacy title that’s passed on to those the predecessor finds worthy to share. While it’s possible for one person to carry that title like Tenjou’s father, many prefer to share the title with their spouse. It not only serves a check and balance system but its said there extra benefits like power boosts and extra abilities exclusive to those who share titles. They work in sync with each other to decide what events will occur Those who work under them reside in both the First and Second Districts. Majority of the Second Districts are souls or supernatural creatures whose good deeds outweigh the bad. The biggest district is the third district.

The problem with that is two fold for another reason. Souls that were consumed by them are forcibly removed from the cycle and new souls are extremely hard to produce and only arrive in small batches every fifty years or so. Fortunately over the years of working together Tenjou proposes to Saori. And while they have their duties as gods to fulfill prayers of the various sorts, they often go out to deal with the constant mononoke problem.

As she took on the guardian role, she essentially became an anchor not only to her family to her husband. While they have their bickering moments, the two grow rather close.

However, she does tend not to be open about herself to others in return. She mostly keeps it to herself unless she has someone who she completely trusts and has managed to stay by her side for a very long time. Building those long term relationships is even harder. After losing her family and regrettably saying no to her first marriage proposal, it’s hard for her to imagine herself having those types of relationships. This would explain why it would take Tenjou ten years to get close enough to her to propose to her.

Some, including her own husband, have argued her kindness makes her unfit to be part of the corps. Her kindness does not make her a doormat. She does get angry and stands up for herself if her close friends and family get hurt, she’s being pestered at work, or someone insults her skills without providing any sort of constructive criticism.

Violence is a last resort for her. In her line of work however there isn’t much of a choice, but Saori always tends to be the one who checks on the victims first before anything else. After experiencing the multiple deaths in the family and her own, she knows the value of life very well.

At the same time however, Saori often puts others’ needs before her own. In doing so she often forsakes her own happiness. She turned down her boyfriend’s marriage proposal because her brother was still a minor and needed a guardian to provide a roof over his head and food. In fact it was her brother who encourage her to go study abroad. Even though she had her moments where she overdid being a motherly figure to him, Akira wanted Saori to have a chance to find her own happiness. When he found out, an argument broke out between them and that was the last conversation they ever had.

Money isn’t what drives her to work. She knows what kind of career she chose and accepted it. Though it took her awhile to adjust to it, she never regretted her choice. When it was revealed she could retire from the work and maybe possibly from the cycle of reincarnation, she turned it down. She knows what she is doing will save others in turn. She has a good sense of morals so she would never manipulate anyone for her own benefit.

Abilities:
Smoke manipulation: By using her free will, Saori can shape smoke to into objects or use it for offensive and defensive purposes in combat. She often carries vials filled with incense smoke, which she has the strongest affinity towards.
Regeneration: Small to medium wounds only. The most she can do is broken bones.
Super strength: Only to a small degree--about three times her own weight.
Hand to hand combat: She often wears bandages wrapped around her hands like a boxer. These (regainable) bandages have special purification properties that can burn a mononoke on contact.
Parkour: Since some areas in Kuukan are easier to traverse on foot than a vehicle, Saori learned how to move around faster though her training.

- When Saori is at work, she often lets him loose in the lobby because she knows he won't cause any trouble and it's bad to keep an Aussie in a small space.
-During Dark Hour, Sirius is affected like the other NPCs and is unavailable during that time

“Baron, how do you feel about chicken and waffles for dinner?” Saori sat on Klaus’s bed as he worked on some new experiment. He stopped and looked over his shoulder.

“Chicken and…waffles.” He took off the safety goggles and looked at her incredulously.

She shrugged. “When I studied abroad in my world’s America, I remember my host mother made them once. Apparently where her family grew it up, it was a thing they ate once in a while. It’s just fried chicken with waffles on the side.”

Well, Klaus did like waffles. So what did he have to lose? “Go ahead. I’ll still be here.”

Saori jumped off the bed and went straight for the hotel’s kitchen. Sometime later, she returned with 2 plates. One was filled with freshly fried chicken and the other had waffles. There was some flour on her from all the cooking but she didn’t seem to care.

The two ate in relevant silence. “So…is it to your liking?” she asked as she cleared the plates. Klaus gave an approving nod. “Just one thing, actually no a few. Follow me.” She tailed after him. The kitchen? Was there something wrong with her cooking?

“Your waffles are quite excellent, however they could use some improvement. First off let’s take a look at the equipment.”

Several hours later, Kaiji entered the kitchen after a bad night of gambling, hoping to find his girlfriend to see how she was doing. Instead he found her and that baron who kept calling him a ‘ruffian’ staring at a waffle iron that seemed to have some extra parts that it wouldn’t normally have. The two were too engrossed with their work to notice Kaiji.

“Done. Let’s how it is.” Saori carefully lifted up the lid and carefully removed the waffle from the iron and onto a plate. The two took a bite from their quarter and the two went quiet.

“My god…this is…amazing. Success!” Saori then noticed Kaiji and walked over to him, giving him a kiss on the cheek. “Kaiji, you need to try this! I think the Baron and I have created the best waffle ever. Also we have fried chicken for chicken and waffles.”

Kaiji stared at it and then back to this girlfriend. “… Chicken and waffles?"

Background Info:

History:
Saori’s world is modeled after our current world.

Saori's parents moved to Kyoto when her mom was still pregnant with her. The move happened because her father got a new job there. Her mother was a home maker while her father worked at a university, as a literature professor.

During her spare time, she looks for new books (specifically on ghost/paranormal subjects) or manga, or buying different kinds of tea.

Her curiosity about the supernatural started when she was little. Her father worked until his disappearance on translating several folklores from classical Japanese to the modern version. While Akira would be scared out of his wits by some of the stories, Saori would always ask for more. Her love for folklore is later reflected in her college work.

Saori eventually graduated high school and attended a college in Osaka. She even studied abroad in America for a year. She graduated college with a degree in English. However it wasn't without a hitch. A week before her graduation, Akira disappeared. There was a police search, but with no leads, it quickly became a cold case.

Saori worked in a publication company after graduation, specializing in translation work for three years, but found the work to be not as satisfying over time. It was then Grandmother suggested she maybe do something she liked: cooking. So she began to plan out making a cafe.

One day, she was visiting the Fushimi-Inari temple in Kyoto.

It's explained that mononoke change from the weaker ayakashi when they feed on a human's strongest emotion. In most cases, it's a very bad thing. However in exchange for the power boost, they lose their identity. However there is a way to overcome this. If they consume a soul of someone who despite many hardships occurring in their life are still pure, not only does their power increase but their lifespan increases as well without losing their identity.

Just as the Nopperabou eats her soul, a man by the name of Tenjou intervenes. However that doesn't stop the mononoke from ripping Saori’s soul from her body. Tenjou is able to finish it, but cannot repair the soul-body bond, rendering Saori now as dead in the human world.

Tenjou then decides to take her to see Inari, his father, about her options since she died prematurely according how much time was left in her lifespan. And while she is able to be reincarnated, she wouldn’t be able to do very soon. The next chance she’s able to be reborn won’t be for another century.

The realm of supernatural is known as Kuukan. Inari decides that Saori can stay under Tenjou's care. It through touring around Kuukan and staying with Tenjou, she realizes his purpose. He’s the leader of Inari's elite corps dedicated to protecting humans from being eaten by ayakashi who want to be mononoke, lower their population and maintain balance to Kuukan.

Saori comes to a decision to help Tenjou so more people won't suffer the same fate as her. Tenjou objected but eventually gives in. She goes through training with Pluto, the corps second-strongest, and it would take her a few years until she got Inari's blessing and joined in the corps. Inari would later say his ‘name’ is technically a title and has to be passed down to his son but traditionally the title of a god was shared by someone so he must marry if he intends to inherit. Fortunately over the years of working together Tenjou proposes to Saori. And while they have their duties as gods to fulfill prayers of the various sorts, they often go out to deal with the constant mononoke problem.

Personality:
Saori’s older sister/motherly type of character. She’s quite independent because she had to help take care of her little brother, grandmother, and herself for a good portion of her life. Akira was a handful as a child, so she had to be more mature than other kids her age.

If a person needed someone to talk to or needed something, Saori would be there to help in anyway possible. She’s considered by her peers as a very reliable and diligent hard worker. However, she does tend not to be open about herself to others. She mostly keeps it to herself unless she has someone who she completely trusts and has managed to stay by her side for a very long time.

Although she doesn't get angry easily, there are a few things that would be crossing the line with her. They are: close friends and family getting hurt, being pestered while she's working, and insulting her culinary skills (as in not constructive criticism). If she does get angry, she wouldn't throw a punch unless they seriously pushed her over the edge. She doesn't believe violence is a way to solve things unless there is really no other choice.

Money isn’t what drives her to work. She has a good sense of morals so she would never manipulate anyone for her own benefit. Saori believes in moderation and does not smoke, but will have a drink on a rare occasion. Also, she also knows her limits and tries not to step over them often.

Game Specific:

Arcana: Empress

Justification:
Motherhood: Saori spends a majority of her time being motherly to someone whether it’s cooking up a meal for them or giving them comfort through words and/or actions. While she’s not a strong fighter, she tends to be a strong anchor for the people she’s close to.

Assurance: Because of the untimely passing of her parents, she had to learn to grow up quickly and become a reliable person, especially in the eyes of her little brother. She always there to support those she cares about.

Emotional discord: While Saori goes out of her way to take care of people, she doesn’t let her own problems be known. Those are mostly coping with the lost of her family and being smothered by things like work. As she continues to bottle up her personal demons, it might hinder her at times, particularly if it's the death anniversary.

Over protectiveness: Because she’s lost many people she’s close with in her life, she can’t help but be a little over protective at times. While she does her best to curb it, sometimes it’s pretty clear she’s restraining herself for that person’s sake.

[There’s a flicker before the video post starts. She shyly waves.]

Good morning, everyone. My name’s Saori Nakagawa. It’s nice to meet you all. I was just wondering: how easy is it to start a café here? It won’t be too big since it’ll just be me starting off. Maybe once I get things settled, I’ll hire some workers. But if there’s a café here I can work at, that would be great too!

Also, where’s the library located? I’d like to learn about the local folklore. I guess you can say it’s a hobby of mine.

Anyways, thank you in advance, and I hope to see you soon. [She smiles and clicks the video off.]

Third Person Sample:
Saori was so absorbed in her book; she barely noticed the time until the librarian personally came to her to say the library was closing. Of course, she had only recently arrived so she was still trying to get her bearings correct. The town seemed quiet and peaceful enough that she didn’t have to worry about being mugged or something like that. Well, there was nothing wrong with staying out a little bit longer. The sky was so clear, the moon lit the pathway long with the street lights.

She had to admit it was jarring experience. One moment, she was about to be eaten by some supernatural creature to only wake up on this island. There was nothing wrong about this place, but something didn’t seem right. Just then, her phone beeped. It was midnight already? Suddenly a chill went up her spine. Why did it suddenly feel like her last moments back home? She quickly looked behind her.

“What on earth…?”

needsteaplz: (So happy~)

Another day working in one of the hotel's cafes passed, and Saori came over to Sasha's room with dinner. Knowing the Psychonaut, he probably would have ignored eating to focus on his research on the hotel that trapped them. That certainly wasn't going to happen with his new girlfriend around though.

Surpringly, the Hotel left them alone throughout dinner. The plates were abandoned while Saori showered. Even after she was done and in a green with black lace bra and panty set, Sasha was already back at his desk.

“Sasha, you should rest your eyes,” she said. “You've been working on your research since I left this morning and it's already this late.” He made a noise as if to say that he heard her, but hearing wasn't listening. While Sasha was deep in his research, Saori walked over to the desk. Carefully, she pushed the papers to the side (much to his horror) so she could sit on the desk. Her hands grabbed his jacket front to pull him close enough to catch his lips with hers before he could utter a word of protest.

When she finally pulled away from the kiss, he couldn't get a word out. “Mmm...maybe sleep can wait, and we can work on our little 'project' together instead.”
